Anna grew up in former Yugoslavia (now Serbia), after graduating from nursing school at age 19. She left the country and worked in Switzerland and Austria as a nurse, where she learned German. Anna was very interested in politics and world affairs from an early age and wanted to learn as much as she could about the politics and issues that connect us all. To gain further experience, she went to Canada and worked as a nurse in Toronto and then in Montreal, learning English and French. French was important because most people did not speak English in Quebec. Three years later, Anna came to San Francisco, where she earned a political science degree from San Francisco State University. In addition, Anna learned Spanish because there were no translators for Spanish speaking patients.
Anna always wanted to help people any way she could. She got involved with organizations fighting for causes that are important to the majority of our people - healthcare for all, education reform, social justice, LGBT rights. 24 years ago, Anna came to Palm Springs, continuing her involvement with organizations trying to effect change. She attends many conferences, at home and abroad, to learn more about the issues that face us and to find the best ways to solve them. While in the desert, Anna has dedicated thousands of hours to volunteering in public school settings, senior citizen centers, and at various events throughout the valley.
We know that homelessness is a huge problem in our community. I believe we must tackle this problem head on. I support fighting homelessness by investing in mental health and substance abuse services and providing job training opportunities for our homeless neighbors. I have a cost effective plan for housing all homeless because our community wants to see a solution to this problem. I will involve philanthropists, Desert Regional Medical Center, tribal leaders, and other NGOs. The hospital is burdened by taking care of homeless with complicated health issues, which are costly, and could be prevented if we had an effective housing solution. The police spend time arresting and ticketing homeless people, taking time away from other pressing public safety issues.
The College of the Desert Palm Springs campus should provide technical, vocational, and coding classes in order to prepare workers for a diversified economy and bring about higher paying jobs, not only depend on hospitality industry. We need well paid workforce which will benefit our economy, skilled labor services, such as plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, and other maintenance. Those jobs pay more than $50 an hour. We can bring hi-tech industry here and this will be win-win situation for everyone.
We must expand transportation methods, such as buses and carpools, and give tax credits to employers who provide vouchers for public transit. Introduce additional conservation measures and new technology, such as more synchronized traffic lights, especially at intersections, where wait times add more to our air pollution. Bringing the rail system back is essential for improving air quality in the area. With dedication and hard work, we can establish a pilot program for rail service sooner than anticipated.
Full time residents deserve better. I support a cap on short term rentals in each neighborhood, however, we need additional funding to support services and needs of our full-time residents. We should double fees for short term rentals - some owners have multiple units and can afford to pay more, with some units making $5000 a night, while permits cost only $500 a year. This act alone will increase availability of needed funds for multiple services that we need.
